New Year Decoration
This decoration is called shimekazari in Japanese.
It consists of twisted straw rope with fern leaves, a daidai orange, and good fortune items. It’s believed to have the power to drive away evil spirits. To welcome the deity of the year, Japanese people clean their house and hang shimekazari on the entrance door to keep their home purified. When I was little, people put shimekszari on their car’s number plate to wish the safety of driving.
Nowadays it’s a shame that fewer people hang it and more forget the tradition!
May this year bring you an ordinary life and happiness!
