Bean Throwing Ceremony
Have you ever thrown beans to the demons? In Japan, we hold bean throwing ceremonies at home, shrines, and temples on the eve of the beginning of spring. When throwing beans, we yell, “Out with the demons, in with good luck”. When I was a child, it was fun to throw beans. This ceremony is held, wishing for good fortune and driving away evil spirits. This year I think many people may have yelled, “Out with covid-19, in with vaccine!” You may wonder when the beginning of spring is. According to the old tradition, it is a day between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox. This year it was February 2nd. It’s usually freezing and nobody thinks it’s spring yet, but spring is just around the corner! I can’t wait!
